Martin Engineering announces two rugged secondary belt cleaners, both designed for speed and ease of maintenance.
The DT2S and DT2H Reversible Cleaners are designed to reduce system downtime and labor for cleaning or repairs, while helping to extend the life of other conveyor components.
Featuring a unique split blade cartridge that slides in and out on a stainless steel mandrel, the cleaner can be serviced or replaced without stopping the conveyor when field safety approvals are in place.“Even if the cleaner is full of material,” said Dave Mueller, Conveyor Product Manager at Martin Engineering, “half of the split frame can be removed so the filter element can be replaced in five minutes. This allows the user to have a spare on hand. cartridges and quickly replace the blades when they need to be replaced. They can then take the used cartridges back to the store, clean them and replace the blades so they are ready for the next service.”
These secondary cleaners are suitable for a variety of applications, from mining, materials processing and quarrying to cement production, food processing and other bulk material handling operations. Both products significantly reduce material carryback, and they are designed to accommodate reverse conveyors to avoid damaging belts or splices.Featuring a steel blade and tungsten carbide tip in a flexible base, the DT2 cleaner provides a simple, effective solution to many backhaul-related problems.
The DT2H Reversible Cleaner XHD is designed for particularly demanding conditions, with heavy loads on belts 18 to 96 inches (400 to 2400 mm) wide and operating at speeds up to 1200 ft/min (6.1 m/s).Carryback build-up can occur on the return run of the conveyor when the cleaning system on the conveyor fails to remove most of the material adhering to the conveyor belt after unloading the load.Increased buildup results in unnecessary cleanup labor costs and, if not controlled, can lead to premature failure of conveyor components.
“Carryback can have an extremely sticky texture and abrasiveness, which can foul conveyor components and cause premature failure,” explains Mueller.”A key to the success of these sweepers is the negative rake angle (less than 90°) of the blades. With a negative angle, you get a ‘scratching’ action that mitigates potential belt damage while providing excellent cleaning performance,” He says.
Like its larger sibling, the Martin DT2S Reversing Cleaner can be installed on belts 18 to 96 inches (400 to 4800 mm) wide.Unlike the DT2H, however, the DT2S is designed to achieve a lower maximum belt speed of 900 fpm (4.6 m/sec) on belts with vulcanized splices.Mueller points out that this is mainly due to differences in application: “The DT2S has a slim frame that enables it to fit in spaces as narrow as 7 inches (178 mm). As a result, the DT2S can be attached to a too small on a belt.”
Both DT2 cleaners can be used in medium to heavy duty environments, providing durable solutions to complex problems caused by backhaul and minimizing escaping material.
An example of cleaner performance can be found at the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation (PVDC) mine in the Sanchez Ramirez province, approximately 55 miles (89 km) northwest of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Operators experience excessive carryback and dust on their conveyor systems, resulting in costly equipment failures, unplanned downtime and increased maintenance.Production is 365 days a year, but between April and October, moisture causes fine clay particles to agglomerate, causing the cargo to become sticky. The substance, which has the consistency of thick toothpaste, is also capable of adhering small aggregates to the belt, causing destructive carryback that can damage pulleys and headers.
In just two weeks, Martin engineering technicians replaced existing belt scrapers at 16 locations with Martin QC1 Cleaner XHD primary cleaners featuring low-adhesion urethane blades designed for sticky material loads, And DT2H secondary cleaner.Secondary cleaner blades can withstand hot summer temperatures, high moisture levels and constant production schedules.
After the upgrade, operations are now cleaner, safer and more efficient, giving executives and stakeholders more confidence in the continued operation of the mine, which is expected to be profitable for the next 25 years or more.
